Dialogue Katherine MEaning Christian

Dialogue

Mr. Frank looked at his desk in confusion. He knew something was wrong with it, but he could put his finger on it. "Hey Ted."      "Yes Mr. Frank," Ted replied.      "Something about my desk looks different now. Do you think it looks different?"       "Nothing jumps out at me when I look at it, Sir." Ted stared at he desk for a few seconds. "Maybe it would help if I asked a few questions about how you desk is now."       Mr. Frank kept staring at his desk. "I'm not sure if it's going to work, but it's worth a shot." replied Mr. Frank.      Ted looked around Mr. Frank's desk. "Alright, Are your pens in the right place?" inquired Ted.      Mr. Frank stared at his black pen holder. It was on the back right corner of his desk. "No, that has always been there." For Mr. Frank, it was the best place for it. He was right-handed, so he could easily get a pen if he needed, but it wasn&

Naomi Shihab Nye

During my day on Thursday, Naomi Shihab Nye, a well known author and poet, came and visited our school. She said this had been the second time that she had been to our school. I do not know when she first came, but that is beyond my point. While she was here she read some poems and put them in context. I found one of these readings to be particularly enticing. This poem was in response to a kid who sent a writing to her. The writing was about creativity and art. At first, I doubted it was from a second grader because it seemed beyond what a second grader could do. The more I listened, the more I thought about what I was thinking in second grade. I always thought of when school would end because I would finish my work early in class and become bored. I never really took the time to think about things like art and writing.      This poem also left me with a question. The question was how many writings does she get and have to respond to everyday. She made a point about how she likes

Check. Mate?

For class, I had to read a personal narrative called "Check. Mate?" by Miles Pequeno. The narrative is about a boy and his experience playing chess with his father. In the narrative, Miles introduces the relationship between father and son as complicated. The father teaches the boy lessons through them playing chess. I personally love the game of chess. I have played for as long as I can remember. My father taught me how to play, but we rarely played after he taught me. I often played against my brother. We were both more evenly matched. I can relate to the story because of this.      The narrator also phrases most of the narrative in chess terminology. One time, the narrator calls himself a pawn in his fathers eyes. At the end, the narrator reflects by saying he could make everything work if he made the right moves. This really builds on the chess theme that permeates the entire story. I don't think it would seem as good if the narrator just said, "I was part

Dear 12-year-old

Dear 12-year-old,      Stop caring about what people think of you. You might not understand now, but trust me. People might think you are weird, or they might call you uncool. Just remember, those adjectives are subjective. They are only dependent on what the person saying them thinks. Start creating that iron gate around your mind that only lets complements and critical advice affect it. One day, you will find the crowd that understands you for who you are. Always remember, you are you, and no one should change who you are.      Also remember you are a kid. Soon, you are going to have to start worrying about what you want too do with your life. Now, enjoy the time you have playing with your friends. You should go be with your friends and have a childhood while you still can. I am still trying to be a child even though school is taking over my life. Also, you should not hate school. School is place for you to experience new activities and learn. It might be a hassle at first, but fin

Eldest: Christopher Paolini's Problem

The book I am currently reading is Eldest by Christopher Paolini. Eragon has made it into Elf territory, and Roran is still trying to help protect the village. While reading, I have noticed a problem with the story overall. As I said in a previous blog post, the story revolves around Eragon and Roran, but the story arcs of the two have nothing in common except one thing. The reason Carvahall is being attacked is because Eragon used to live there and Roran is related to Eragon. I see this as a major problem. The way I am reading the book now is basically reading two different books at once. The only other book I have read with multiple main characters in different positions is Allegiant by Veronica Roth. In that book, the main characters are at least trying to achieve the same thing.      I see this as a major problem for two reasons: the story feels choppy, and it becomes hard to remember what happens in each section. The way the story is going now, The novel is choppy because o

9/11: A Continuing Problem

I recently read an article about the after affects of the September, 11 terrorist attacks. If you would like to read it, you can find the article here . The article talks about some people who have been suffering the after-effects of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Most of them have suffered serious medical conditions after working at the Ground Zero area. I understand how they get these diseases and cancers. People inhale toxic dust and debris and end up getting sick. I find this must be a horrible way to die. I find there is one problem with this.      I understand that they get sick from the dust and debris, but I find the world is cruel for doing something like this. All of these people who are getting sick from these rescue sites were only trying to help people in need. If there is somebody up there running this world, how can somebody rewarded with a gut-twisting sickness after they just tried to help people? I know the main answer is science, but I find life to be cruel like t
