Research Update

     Between our Social Studies and English classes, I have been working on a joint research paper. The topic I chose was Karl Marx relationship with Russian communism. I have found this topic to be very interesting thus far. I think a lot of people get confused about what communism actually is. Communism is a socioeconomic system that is supposed to benefit the proletariat or working class people. This system seems good in theory, but it has its problems. It all starts off with the criticism of Capitalism, the current dominant economic system. They say that the Bourgeois, middle class, are only making the proletariat suffer through the economic system through taking advantage of them.       Communism really boils down to one key economic prospect: the abolition of private property. Relaxation

     Over this fall break, I planned to do a lot of relaxation. For me, relaxation is anytime where I can basically shut down. It is any time when I can take my mind off the world around me. This was the perfect time for me to relieve all of the stress that school has put on me. It is a great way for me to catch up on some sleep I have missed. Relaxation is a way to unwind and take your mind off everything. Relaxation is great, but this is only one part of it.      Relaxation has two parts: turning your mind away from the world, and focusing on your own thoughts. This second part is what I like most about relaxation. I don't have a one track mind. Whenever I am doing something, I have some many different trains of thought. When I relax, the train tracks might as well have disappeared. I stop worrying about everything and focus on who I have become. Check. Mate?

     For class, I had to read a personal narrative called "Check. Mate?" by Miles Pequeno. The narrative is about a boy and his experience playing chess with his father. In the narrative, Miles introduces the relationship between father and son as complicated. The father teaches the boy lessons through them playing chess. I personally love the game of chess. I have played for as long as I can remember. My father taught me how to play, but we rarely played after he taught me. I often played against my brother. We were both more evenly matched. I can relate to the story because of this.      The narrator also phrases most of the narrative in chess terminology. One time, the narrator calls himself a pawn in his fathers eyes. At the end, the narrator reflects by saying he could make everything work if he made the right moves. This really builds on the chess theme that permeates the entire story.
